What is Chiropractic
How Chiropractic Works and Why It Matters
Chiropractic is the branch of the healing arts based on the understanding that good health depends on a normally functioning nervous system and musculoskeletal system.
- More info
The term “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word “chiropracktikos,” meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes might begin with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases without the use of drugs or chemicals, but by locating and working on improperly functioning areas of the musculoskeletal system. The conditions which doctors of chiropractic address are varied, and it is best to consult with your chiropractor to determine if your discomfort can be improved with care.
The focus of treatment in our office is geared toward the management of musculoskeletal pain. Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion and countless other factors can result in alterations of function within the joints of the spinal column, causing irritation to spinal nerves and the supportive muscles.

These irritations are often the cause of the stiffness and soreness that brings patients to seek chiropractic help. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating the irritation to the muscles, joints, and spinal nerves will allow your body to operate more efficiently and comfortably.
- More info
Doctors of chiropractic use the same time-honored methods of consultation, case history, physical examination, laboratory analysis, and x-ray examination when appropriate as any other doctor. Additionally, they provide a careful chiropractic structural and functional analysis paying special attention to the spine. The examination of the spine to evaluate structure and function is what makes chiropractors different from other health care professionals managing similar conditions. The exam, in addition to your personal case history, physical evaluation and possibly x-rays, will be used to diagnose your condition and will determine your course of treatment.
Doctors of chiropractic do refer patients for other medical care when those interventions are needed or when a patient does not respond as quickly or positively to treatment as expected. Chiropractors are part of your medical team and work with their partners in other medical disciplines to help their patients get the best results.

What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care restores proper spine and nervous system function so your body can heal the way it was designed. At Fairfax Station Chiropractic, our doctors focus on pinpointing and treating conditions that affect your muscles, joints, and nerves—especially those that trigger back and neck pain. Our clinic emphasizes long-term wellness through education on stretching, exercise, and ergonomics so you can prevent issues from returning.
- More info
Treatment typically features precise spinal adjustments. Your chiropractor applies controlled, gentle pressure to individual joints to restore motion, decrease discomfort, and improve nerve communication. To support long-term results, we supplement adjustments with therapeutic exercises, soft-tissue techniques, and posture or movement coaching that help prevent future flare-ups.

Benefits of Chiropractic

How Chiropractic Care Restores Balance and Relieves Pain
One of the main causes of preventable pain in the human body can be traced to improper alignment of the vertebrae and function of the joints in the spinal column. This lack of function in a spinal joint is called a chiropractic subluxation.
- More info
It is the goal of chiropractic care to use manual manipulation of the vertebrae and other joints to restore normal joint mobility and function, which allows your body to return to its natural state of balance called homeostasis. To put it another way, when the bones in your spine are allowed to move and work normally with the body’s other muscles and joints, and your body is working properly, you should feel better.
Chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations can be especially helpful in relieving pain for facet joint injuries, osteoarthritis, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction, because such conditions respond well to mobilization. Moreover, scores of patients with chronic tension type headaches and in some cases migraines have reported significant relief after chiropractic therapy. Chiropractic care can also be utilized to help with healing and manage pain in disc injuries that are not significant enough to warrant surgery.
Increasingly, over the past few decades through the validation of many clinical studies, the medical community has come to recognize chiropractic care as an appropriate form of treatment for a wide variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractic care has been shown to be one of the best considered treatment options for patients with low back pain and new studies are completed routinely validating the benefit of chiropractic care in managing a wide range of other conditions.
Studies by leading medical journals in recent years have confirmed the benefits of chiropractic care:
- A 1993 report by the Ontario Ministry of Health concluded that chiropractic care was the most effective treatment for lower back pain.
- In 1994, the federal Agency for Health Care Policy and Research published its Clinical Practice Guidelines, which asserted that spinal manipulation was effective in reducing pain and speeding recovery.
- A 1996 New England Journal of Medicine study found that patients treated by chiropractors were significantly more satisfied than those who saw primary care, orthopedic or managed care practitioners.
- A 1996 study in the journal Spine found that patients who sought chiropractic care were more likely to feel treatment was helpful, more likely to be satisfied with their care, and less likely to seek care from another provider for the same condition.
- In 2001, the Center for Clinical Health Policy Research at Duke University concluded in a study that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches that originate in the neck, with fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.

Chiropractic Qualifications
Educational Requirements
The educational requirements for chiropractors are similar to other medical professionals. In general, most chiropractors have a four-year degree from an accredited college or university, and all have completed another 4-5 academic years of post-graduate study from one of the nation’s 17 accredited chiropractic colleges.
- More info
During the first two years of study in chiropractic college, students receive classroom and laboratory work in anatomy, physiology, public health, microbiology, pathology, and biochemistry.
The final two years involve courses in spinal adjustments and manipulation, as well as clinical experience in areas that may include physical and laboratory diagnosis, neurology, orthopedics, geriatrics, physiotherapy, biomechanics, radiology, nutrition, and natural medicine.

Post-graduate chiropractic study is followed by a one-year internship at a college clinic. Many chiropractic colleges also have programs to rotate interns through hospital rounds with other medical students. Several chiropractors choose to continue with additional years of advanced or post-graduate study in a clinical area of interest.
After obtaining their Doctor of Chiropractic degree, chiropractors must complete at least two board exams: (1) the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) exam and (2) the board exam from the state in which they practice.

Credentials
All 50 states license Doctors of Chiropractic to practice. All chiropractors must meet certain requirements, including:
- Completion of a four to five academic year chiropractic college course of study at an accredited program leading to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
- Satisfactory completion of board exams.
- Ongoing continuing education courses or programs offered by accredited chiropractic programs and institutions, as well as chiropractic associations.
Chiropractors also are able to obtain certification in such areas as orthopedics, neurology, sports injuries, occupational and industrial health, nutrition, diagnostic imaging, thermography, spinal rehabilitation and internal disorders.
